Tax collector returns and oaths, 1785-1792 (bulk 1785-1789)

Series consists of (1) collectors' returns, 1787-1791, received by the office of Treasurer Hodgdon (1787-1792), and (2) collectors' oaths ,1785-1789, received by the offices of treasurers Ivers (1782-1787) and Hodgdon (1787-1792). Also included is related correspondence from collectors regarding pledges to pay excise taxes, requests for excise reimbursement, accounts and commissions to the comptroller general, taxes received from the sale of non-resident lands (see: Resolves 1787, May Sess, c 49 (June 22, 1787)), and summary receipts.

Throughout the provincial period, Massachusetts towns were periodically assessed by the Treasury with taxes for the defraying of public charges and support of the government. This practice increased in importance and frequency during the Revolutionary War, as individual colonies became largely responsible for financial support of the war effort.
